Herders Raid Kills One, Wounds Another in Benue

Troops from Operation Whirl Stroke raced to Chikor in the Logo Local Government Area of Benue State after a predawn attack on residents left one man dead and another wounded.

Security sources say the raid happened around 4:30 a.m. on May 30, when a group described as suspected armed herders stormed the village and opened fire.

Neighbors who survived the shock called soldiers stationed at nearby Ayilamo, and the troops moved quickly to the scene.

By the time soldiers arrived, they had confirmed one fatality and found an injured man, who was promptly taken to Ayin General Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

The family of the deceased has been allowed to take the body for burial according to local customs, security officials said.

Since the incident, military patrols have been stepped up across Chikor and neighboring communities.

Troops remain visible in the area while intelligence-gathering and search operations continue to track those responsible.

Authorities urged residents to stay alert and to pass any reliable information to security agencies to help prevent repeat attacks.

Operation Whirl Stroke reiterated its resolve to protect communities in Benue and the surrounding region, promising sustained operations aimed at restoring calm and preventing further violence.

For many in Chikor, the assault has renewed fears about rural insecurity and the vulnerability of farming communities at the edges of conflict.

Local leaders and residents now face the immediate task of comforting a grieving family while working with security forces to ensure the village is safe.

This incident is the latest in a string of clashes that have frayed trust between herders and farmers in parts of the Middle Belt, highlighting the urgent need for more effective coordination between security forces and local communities to prevent loss of life and disrupt the cycles of reprisal.
