Mudryk Cleared to Return Immediately After FA, WADA Resolve Doping Case
Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk is free to return to competitive football with immediate effect after the Football Association resolved his anti-doping case in full agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency.
The breakthrough ends a lengthy and deeply personal ordeal for the 25-year-old Ukraine international, who has not featured in a competitive match since November 2024.
The FA confirmed on Friday that the disciplinary proceedings against Mudryk were settled on 30 July 2026.
As part of the agreement, the player accepted that he had committed Anti-Doping Rule Violations but the period of ineligibility was limited strictly to the time already served.
This means the original four-year ban imposed earlier this year no longer applies in full.
Mudryk’s troubles began with an out-of-competition test taken while on international duty with Ukraine in October 2024.
The sample returned a low concentration of meldonium, a prohibited cardiovascular substance known to enhance respiratory capacity and stamina.
He was provisionally suspended in December 2024 and formally charged by the FA in June 2025.
An independent Regulatory Commission later found him guilty following a hearing in January 2026 and imposed the maximum four-year ban. Mudryk appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
What changed the course of the case was a subsequent update to WADA’s technical document governing the reporting of meldonium.
Although the revised standards are not retroactive, the FA noted that if the same sample had been analyzed under today’s requirements, the concentration would not have been reported as an adverse finding, and no anti-doping rule violation would have resulted.
This scientific development, combined with the time Mudryk had already spent on the sidelines, allowed the parties to reach a resolution under Article 10.8.2 of the World Anti-Doping Code.
“Mr. Mudryk is no longer ineligible and may return to competition with immediate effect,” the FA stated clearly.
Chelsea responded with measured relief and clear intent. In an official club statement, the Blues said: “We know how much this opportunity to return means to him. Our focus now is on supporting Misha’s reintegration into the squad and helping him resume his career.
Everyone at the Club now looks forward to helping Misha return to full fitness, back into the squad and back onto the pitch.”
The club also welcomed the acknowledgement that current testing standards would not have produced a positive result from the same sample.
Mudryk himself described the past 20 months as the most difficult period of his professional life. He has consistently maintained that he never knowingly or intentionally took any banned substance.
In a personal statement released after the resolution, he expressed deep gratitude to his family, friends, Chelsea, his teammates, the club’s supporters, and his legal team for standing by him throughout the process.
His full attention, he said, is now on getting back on the pitch, working hard and making a positive impact once again.
The Ukrainian joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a high-profile transfer that carried an initial fee of around £61 million and a long-term contract running until 2031.
His early promise was interrupted by inconsistency and then by this prolonged absence.
During the suspension he was unable to train at the club’s facilities and instead arranged private sessions, including work with goalkeepers and a training camp in Austria, in an effort to maintain his fitness.
Whether Mudryk immediately forces his way back into the first-team picture under the current management, seeks minutes on loan, or explores other options remains to be seen. What is certain is that the legal chapter has closed.
For a player still only 25, the resolution offers a genuine second chance to rewrite the narrative of his Chelsea career and to show the Premier League what he can still become.
The case also highlights the evolving nature of anti-doping science and the importance of technical standards keeping pace with detection methods.
For Mudryk, Chelsea and Ukrainian football, Friday’s news marks the end of a long wait and the beginning of a carefully managed return.
