G100 Unveils Doctrine of Necessary Opposition, Demands Single 2027 Candidate to Challenge APC Monopoly

In a powerful intervention that has sent ripples across Nigeria’s political landscape, a coalition of 100 concerned citizens known as G100 has unveiled a strongly worded open letter titled “The Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition.”

Released on Sunday, August 2, 2026, the document issues an urgent call for opposition leaders to set aside personal ambitions, unite under a single presidential candidate, and present a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The letter, shared widely on social media and covered by major Nigerian media outlets, argues that no democracy can remain free unless those who govern are matched by those capable of replacing them.

It declares that Nigeria cannot be rescued by opposition leaders who “march separately toward the same defeat.”

The group insists that a united failure cannot be defeated by a divided alternative — a pointed reminder of the 2023 presidential election, when votes split among major opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, helped deliver victory to President Bola Tinubu.

At the heart of the doctrine is a demand for the immediate convening of a National Council of Opposition Leaders within the next two weeks.

The proposed gathering is expected to reaffirm the spirit of the Ibadan Declaration, adopted on April 25, 2026, during a national summit of opposition parties hosted in Oyo State.

That earlier declaration had already committed participating parties to work toward fielding one presidential candidate for 2027 as a strategy to resist what they described as moves toward a one-party state.

G100 addresses key opposition figures by name, including former Senate President David Mark, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and others.

The group stresses that history has little regard for frustrated ambition and reserves its highest honour for those who place country above self.

“Ambition ceases to be a virtue the moment it places itself above the Republic,” the letter states.

Beyond electoral strategy, the doctrine paints a broader picture of Nigeria’s challenges.

It contends that the nation’s crisis is structural rather than purely economic or political, rooted in institutions that reward loyalty and patronage over merit, service and accountability.

Without a strong, principled opposition capable of challenging, correcting and, when necessary, replacing the government through peaceful elections, democratic accountability itself is endangered.

The document draws historical parallels, recalling the G34’s resistance to military self-succession and the Doctrine of Necessity invoked during the prolonged absence of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

It argues that democracies rarely perish in a single day; they decay when opposition becomes disorganized, citizens grow indifferent, and ambition triumphs over principle.

While the call has generated hope among those yearning for a viable alternative, scepticism remains. Political observers note the long-standing difficulty of subordinating individual ambitions and regional calculations to a common purpose in Nigerian opposition politics.

The tight two-week timeline for the proposed National Council has also drawn questions about feasibility.

Nevertheless, the G100 maintains that the hour is too grave for scattered ambition and private calculation.

As Nigeria edges closer to the January 2027 elections, the doctrine has reopened fundamental questions about the health of multi-party democracy.

Whether opposition leaders will answer the call to unity—or continue along separate paths — may well determine not only the outcome of the next presidential contest but also the quality of democratic choice available to ordinary Nigerians.
