Amaechi Accuses Presidency of Trying to Intimidate Cardinal Onaiyekan Over Criticisms

Abuja, Nigeria – August 4, 2026 — African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has strongly defended Cardinal John Onaiyekan against recent criticisms from the Presidency, accusing the government of attempting to intimidate the respected Catholic cleric.

Speaking in an interview aired by Channels Television, Amaechi dismissed claims that the Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja was partisan.

“That’s where they make a mistake: Cardinal Onaiyekan himself supports nobody. I have had several conversations with him.

The only thing that pains him is the level of indiscretion, poverty, and corruption in Nigeria… I just think they are trying to intimidate Onaiyekan,” Amaechi said.

The exchange stems from a closed-door meeting held on July 28, 2026, between President Bola Tinubu and members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).

After the meeting, Cardinal Onaiyekan publicly shared that the bishops had raised concerns about the state of the economy, insecurity, poverty and governance.

He indicated that the President rejected their assessment and that those around Tinubu were presenting an overly optimistic picture of the country while the administration remained focused on the 2027 elections.

The Presidency responded sharply, accusing Onaiyekan of abusing clerical privilege by publicly disclosing and interpreting details of a private discussion.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike also weighed in, describing the Cardinal as partisan and stating that his political leanings were well known.

Amaechi, the running mate to ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 election, rejected the characterization of Onaiyekan as a political actor. He portrayed the Cardinal as a consistent moral voice troubled by Nigeria’s deepening social and economic challenges rather than by any partisan agenda.

The former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation positioned the Presidency’s reaction as an attempt to silence legitimate criticism from a senior religious figure known for speaking candidly on national issues across successive administrations.

The episode has reignited debate about the role of religious leaders in Nigerian public life, especially amid widespread economic hardship and the approaching 2027 general elections.

While some government officials view the Cardinal’s comments as inappropriate interference, many Nigerians have welcomed the clergy’s willingness to highlight citizens’ suffering.

As the political temperature continues to rise, Amaechi’s intervention adds another layer to the growing tension between the ruling establishment and critical voices within the Catholic Church hierarchy.
