Ibadan, Oyo State β€” In a proactive operation that underscores the Oyo State Police Command’s ongoing efforts to keep communities safe, officers have arrested three suspected armed robbers and recovered a locally fabricated pistol along with an axe.

The arrests took place on Monday, 3 August 2026, at about 12:30 p.m. Operatives from the Oluyole Divisional Headquarters were conducting a routine stop-and-search around the Rhema Bridge axis of Oluyole in Ibadan when they intercepted a Bajaj motorcycle carrying three suspicious individuals.

A thorough search of the suspects and their belongings turned up a cut-to-size locally fabricated pistol and an axe, both carefully concealed inside a black school bag.

The men were immediately taken into custody, and the recovered items secured as exhibits for further investigation.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the suspects belong to the Aiye and Eiye cult groups. They reportedly confessed to involvement in a series of violent crimes, including armed robbery.

Police say they have stepped up investigations to determine the full extent of the suspects’ activities and to track down other members of their network still at large.

Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, psc, mnips, praised the officers for their vigilance and professionalism. He noted that their swift action likely prevented further violent crimes.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, increased visibility patrols, and strategic stop-and-search operations designed to deny criminals any room to operate in the state.

The Oyo State Police Command continues to urge residents to stay alert and report suspicious persons or activities promptly through official channels.

Emergency contacts include the Oyo State Call Response Center toll-free line 615, and the Command Control Room numbers 08081768614 and 07055495413.

The press release was issued by DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, on 4 August 2026.
