Aiyedatiwa Backs Wike’s Rainbow Coalition as Tinubu Support Drive Gains Momentum Ahead of 2027
Abuja/Akure—October 5, 2026—Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has thrown his weight behind the Rainbow Coalition led by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, declaring that there is nothing wrong with the cross-party platform mobilizing support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Speaking during a one-on-one interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Aiyedatiwa made clear that he has no problem with Wike or the coalition’s objective of rallying politicians and citizens across party lines behind the President.
He noted that the group is simply supporting Tinubu and that such political collaboration should not attract controversy.
“The Rainbow Coalition led by Wike—there’s nothing wrong with having a coalition. If the Rainbow Coalition is supporting President Tinubu, what is wrong with that?” the governor said. “I don’t have any problem with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, but in my state, it’s APC all the way.”
Aiyedatiwa also highlighted his longstanding personal relationship with Wike. He recalled that the former Rivers State governor supported him during his governorship race under the All Progressives Congress (APC), even though Wike remained a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the time and did not back the PDP candidate.
Broader Political Context
Wike’s Rainbow Coalition has become one of the most discussed political developments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The FCT Minister has repeatedly described it as a multi-party platform designed to mobilize support for Tinubu from politicians and supporters outside the APC, while insisting that it has no formal affiliation with the ruling party.
Wike has maintained that his priority is Tinubu’s re-election and that members of the coalition remain free to support candidates of their choice in governorship, National Assembly and state assembly races.
This position has drawn criticism from some APC governors, who argue that any parallel structure risks undermining the ruling party’s candidates at other levels.
In recent weeks, several Progressive Governors Forum members have publicly rejected arrangements they believe could weaken the APC.
Wike has pushed back, stating that President Tinubu is aware of the coalition and that his focus remains solely on securing a second term for the President.
Aiyedatiwa’s Measured Stance
Aiyedatiwa’s comments strike a more conciliatory tone. While affirming loyalty to the APC in Ondo State, he declined to join the criticism of Wike’s initiative.
Political observers see the governor’s remarks as an attempt to maintain cordial relations with a key Tinubu ally while protecting his own political base in the South-West.
The interview also touched on opposition politics and pressure on the APC as the 2027 election season approaches.
Aiyedatiwa used the platform to restate his commitment to the ruling party’s structures in Ondo, even as national realignments continue to reshape the political landscape.
As the debate over the Rainbow Coalition intensifies, Aiyedatiwa’s endorsement of its Tinubu-focused objective adds another voice to the conversation about how cross-party support can be organized without fracturing existing party structures.
The coming months are expected to reveal whether more governors and political actors will publicly align with or distance themselves from Wike’s multi-party mobilization strategy.
