Tinubu Congratulates Modi on Historic 25 Years of Continuous Leadership in India
Abuja, Nigeria—October 6, 2026—President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on completing 25 years of continuous service as head of government, describing the milestone as a rare and powerful testament to the enduring confidence of the Indian people.
In a formal State House statement released Tuesday and signed by the President, Tinubu noted that October 7, 2026, marks exactly 25 years since Modi first assumed office on October 7, 2001, as Chief Minister of Gujarat.
After more than 12 years transforming the western Indian state, Modi has served uninterrupted as Prime Minister of India since 2014.
“A quarter-century of unbroken leadership is a rare achievement in any democracy. In the world’s most populous nation, it is a powerful testament to the enduring confidence the Indian people have placed in him,” Tinubu said.
The Nigerian leader praised Modi’s vision and commitment to development, highlighting Gujarat’s transformation and India’s rise as one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies.
He specifically pointed to progress in infrastructure, digital public goods, financial inclusion, and innovation that have lifted millions and inspired nations across the Global South.
Tinubu also recalled Modi’s historic State Visit to Abuja in November 2024, during which Nigeria conferred on him the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger. That visit, he said, gave fresh momentum to bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, energy, defence and security, health, education, and technology.
“Nigeria deeply values the strategic partnership between our two great nations,” the President stated. As fellow democracies and leading voices of the Global South, he added, Nigeria and India share a common commitment to a fairer, more inclusive, and more representative international order.
Tinubu concluded by wishing Modi good health, continued strength, and every success in serving the people of India, expressing confidence that the bonds of friendship between the two peoples will grow even stronger under the Indian leader’s continued stewardship.
The message comes as India’s Union Cabinet also passed a formal resolution on Tuesday congratulating Modi on the same milestone, describing it as more than a customary tribute and highlighting his journey guided by “Nation First” and “Citizen First” principles.
The anniversary underscores the long-standing diplomatic warmth between Abuja and New Delhi, with both countries positioning themselves as key partners in the Global South.
